Lancaster was built on trade. Those meandering canal towpaths, branching off from the River Lune, were vital trade routes. (Today they’re perfect for walking dogs.) Their banks are lined with grand, decadent Georgian buildings – Town and Crown have long been connected here.

There’s plenty to do, too. A smattering of quirky boutiques and independent galleries sit beside high-street stores on Penny Street, St Nic’s, and Marketgate. Pubs. Bars. Theatre. Art. A thriving independent music scene. Sport.
