Galentine’s Day 2020 - Hello Student

Galentine’s Day 2020

If you find yourself single as Valentine’s Day draws closer, do not succumb to the sadness and act in glum haste. Don’t reach for Hinge or Tinder and definitely don’t go backwards for anyone in your past. It’s 2020 and we are whole on our own. We know our worth, we set boundaries and we don’t settle. Don’t let the sticky pink consumerist love get you down, take this opportunity to have a beautiful time with the people you love.

In fact, this celebration didn’t become one of romance until relatively recently – it originated as a time dedicated to warding off evil spirits and purifying your surroundings. More people are single than ever before, so let’s take this opportunity to celebrate all the other kinds of love we have. Or perhaps just another excuse to have a good time…

Nights Out

If you want to take advantage of the fact that Valentine’s Day falls on a weekend this year, there are tons of exciting nights out waiting for you.

Bussey Building’s Disco Freaks – Love is in The Flare! promises to bring you a range of groovy disco all night long.

If you can’t help but feel bitter but still fancy a boogie, The Beehive’s Stupid Cupid will be filled with everything anti-Valentine’s.

Alternatively, if you’d like a bit of culture alongside dancing with your best friend, KNM are hosting Not Your Galentine’s Day at the Amersham Arms, where your ticket grants entry to both the gallery and the venue – two in one!

Cute Things

If you’re after something a bit more wholesome, look no further.

On Thursday 13th, Floral Street are back for their third Galentine’s Day Party and it’s completely free! Simply download a (limited) ticket and enjoy all the fruity and floral surprises they’ve got for you and your girls.

It’s easy to get caught up in the giving of love and forget to give yourself any attention, but The Curve Catwalk are here to make sure that doesn’t happen. Their Self-Love Event is going to be packed full of yoga, writing, movement therapy and much more, all in a safe, femme space, guaranteed to leave you feeling full, loved and not alone.

UKafrolista take pride in ‘helping women become the best versions of themselves for themselves’ at their Being Loved: Galentine’s Dinner. This gorgeous event includes a three-course meal, a self-care workshop with a psychologist, a safe and inclusive space and the opportunity to connect with other like-minded women – invaluable!

Arts & Crafts

If you want to make (something with) love, there are loads of events calling you to flex your creative fingers.

M.Y.O. @ Re-creation are hosting a tassel-making workshop, where you can learn how to make keyrings, earrings and nipple tassels! Everything you need will be provided and it’s BYOB. What more could you and the gals possibly want?!

There is also a Galentine’s Zine Workshop hosted by Grrrl Zine Fair and shado mag. This event offers you complete freedom of self-expression in an inclusive, accessible LGBTQIA+ space, helping you to create a love-themed zine, from any angle you fancy. All materials and refreshments supplied.

Arts Sisterhood UK are hosting an Art Workshop on Thursday 13th at The Roundhouse. With the focus on sorority, sisterhood and support, whether you’re alone or in a gaggle, all women and femmes are welcome. This beautiful workshop will include various forms of art therapy, aiming to help with loneliness, anxiety, self-care, confidence, creativity and so much more. It is a completely safe-space with a psychotherapist on site.

Finally, and perhaps where we should all be channeling our love this year, UKSCN are holding another climate strike, a year since the first one. If you also care about how our planet is becoming more and more inhabitable, join the London YouthStrike4Climate on Friday 14th at Parliament Square.
