Summer in the UK offers more than just London’s attractions. From festivals to food markets, here’s what’s going on and where you can stay, with Hello Student’s flexible summer short stays.
The long summer break presents a fantastic window of opportunity. Many students use this time to gain crucial work experience or undertake internships, significantly boosting their CVs and exploring potential career paths. Landing a placement in a different city – perhaps in Manchester’s thriving media scene or Bristol’s innovative tech sector – offers invaluable exposure to new industries and professional environments.
Beyond career goals, summer is also an ideal time to earn extra money. You might transfer your current part-time job to another branch, or find exciting new temporary work in hospitality, retail, or at seasonal events. Working in a new city not only helps fund your summer adventures, but it can also broaden your horizons and network. Naturally, relocating for work or an internship requires a place to stay. You may need summer short term student accommodation to make this possible, providing a comfortable, convenient base without the hassle of long-term contracts.
When you’re moving to another city for an internship or job opportunity, you also want to be able to have fun in your spare time too. Here’s what’s going on in some of the best student cities in the UK this summer.
Manchester pulses with energy year-round, but summer amps it up. There’s the Parklife Festival at Heaton Park in June, Manchester Psych Fest in August, and Manchester Oktoberfest in October. Don’t miss the Bolton Food and Drink Festival in August too if you’re a foodie.
Summer in Edinburgh is known for its festivals. There’s the Fringe Festival that takes place over the whole month of August, the Edinburgh Jazz and Blues Festival in July, and the Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo in August.
Bristol’s harbourside is central to its summer buzz, hosting the Harbour Festival in July with music, food, and maritime displays. Don’t miss the Feast on Food Festival held in the same month, and the Bristol International Balloon Fiesta in August.
Leeds offers urban excitement alongside green retreats. There’s the Thirsty Boots Festival and the Great British Food Festival in May followed by the Dance Anthems Orchestra in June.
Dubbed ‘The Outdoor City’, Sheffield excels in summer thanks to its proximity to the Peak District – ideal for outdoor enthusiasts. Within the city, Tramlines Festival in Hillsborough Park is a major highlight in July. There’s also the Sheffield Cocktail Festival in May and The Podcast Festival in July.
Liverpool’s musical heritage and welcoming atmosphere make it a brilliant summer choice. Creamfields is back in August, and the Southport Flower Show will be held in the same month.
The Welsh capital blends history with modern vibrancy. Bute Park is hosting the Foodies Festival in May, and there’s also the one day music festival, Rock the Castle in July.
