Getting around Southampton

Southampton is super easy to get around. There are 9 cycle routes across the city, plus plenty of footpaths and green spaces. You’ve also got loads of public transport options, including 5 bus operators and 4 train operators for getting around the city, or travelling further afield.

Best student areas in Southampton

Portswood

Around a 15-minute walk from both campuses, Portswood is a popular student area with great links via the U1/U6 bus routes. You’ve got easy access to Southampton Central Station and the airport too, plus loads of coffee shops and supermarkets close by.

Highfield

Highfield is a peaceful, green area that’s perfect if you prefer a quieter pace. It’s around a 15-minute cycle or 30-minute walk from Solent, and it’s a great spot for getting some fresh air between lectures.

Swaythling

Right on the doorstep of the University of Southampton, Swaythling has a mix of student living and local history. It’s home to the WWII-era Salmon Pool and the medieval St Mary’s Church, ideal if you fancy something different at the weekend.
